MARCH studio / ARCHITECTURE

Combining the aspect of the site’s southern and eastern views with the need to adhere to northern light, the design of the house is multidirectional and symmetrical. The cruciform plan is programmed almost like a clock – waking up to the morning sun, eating in the afternoon light and viewing the sun setting to the west. These spaces are both separated and united by four decks to enable the inhabitants to escape from the harsh, often unpredictable Tasmanian winds.
With no maximum building height in the area, the house stretches towards the sky to increase views and minimise the footprint on the rural land. Balanced by prefabricated, timber Glue-Lam beams and finished in rough sawn timber, the design of the Huon Valley House is one that could be built on virtually any green field site.
