Fashion designer Kit Willow recently launched her new label Kit X. Situated in Oxford Street in Sydney’s Paddington, the store’s interior exploits raw materials to create a series of discrete yet powerful gestures.
The primary move of the design is to remove the first floor almost entirely, leaving only the exposed beams and a floating fireplace. The result doubles the floor to ceiling height of the interior, allowing more natural light to stream in from windows above.
The second move is the stacked timber staircase, constructed from Victorian Ash, which morphs into a landing, a display and finally the front point of sale desk. The material it’s made from, as well as the act of sell and display, fundamentally anchors this free-flowing sculptural manoeuvre.
